Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has shared key updates on Ghana’s housing sector at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30.
During the address, he indicated that a number of housing projects have been completed.
These include the ?Borteyman and Asokore Mampong Affordable Housing Projects. Similarly, he said ? ??1,000 homes have been completed and handed over to the Security Services since 2017.
He added that ongoing efforts have seen the delivery of 405 NHF units, 1,072 TDC units, and the launch of public servant housing projects across Greater Accra.
“We are also proud to report that 2,336 Ghanaians have benefited from the National Rental Assistance Scheme with a 100% recovery rate,” the Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker said.
“Our work doesn’t stop here. The Ministry is focusing on eight key priorities,? ?including resolving stalled projects,? ??fast-tracking ongoing affordable housing, and? ??commencing the District Housing Program, among others.
“At the Ministry of Works and Housing, we are committed to ensuring more and more Ghanaians get access to decent, affordable housing. The journey continues!”
He also announced that the government is constructing 1,000 housing units for individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 percent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units. We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2.”
The spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which occurred on October 15, 2023, devastated communities along the Lower Volta Basin.
Approximately 88,000 people were affected, and over 5,000 homes were destroyed. Nearly a year later, many victims remain displaced.
