Ghana’s Black Princesses began their 2024 World Cup campaign on a disappointing note succumbing to a 2-1 loss to debutants Austria on Monday night.
Making their seventh appearance at the continental showpiece, the team is aiming to surpase the group phase for the first time and a win against first-timers were on the cards.
However, they experienced a shock night in Bogota when Austria stunned them with crucial strikes.
THey took the lead through First Vienna forward Hannah Fankhauser in the 12th minute dealing a huge blow to Yussif Basigi’s plan from the beginning.
Efforts from the Ghanaians to restore parity ended in futility with strikes from Stella Nyamkye going wide and some smashing the woodwork.
The debutants in the second half were unsatisfied and doubled the lead from the spot thanks to Nicole Ojukwu in the 71st minute.
Ghana could only respond in the 90th minute through Stella Nyamekye’s wonderful solo effort from long range to pull one back.
