Flourish Sabastine grabbed the headlines with a late strike to secure Nigeria’s first win (1-0) of the U-20 Women’s World Cup against South Korea at the Estadio de Metropolitano de Techo on Sunday.
In a relatively even first half, with both teams canceling each other out, South Korea’s Ye-Bin Bae had the clearest sight at goal with a long range free kick, which cannoned off Nigeria’s post just before the interval.
The rhythm and tempo of the second half followed the first, with both teams adopting a cautious approach.
However, Nigerian forward Sebastine Flourish changed the narrative. The 19-year-old’s attempted cross from the right edge of the box after 86 minutes, looped over South Korea’s back peddling goalkeeper, Seo-Bin Woo, and found the back of the net.
The Falconets, who had beaten South Korea in three of their previous meetings prior to Sunday’s, extended their dominance over the Asian side to four.
The hot-streak of wins also saw Nigeria record their 20th win in the tournament’s history, with Flourish’s goal being their 70th.
Moreover, Nigeria’s clean sheet on the opening day against Korea saw them take their opening day clean sheet tally to three, while recording their 5th opening day victory in 11 attempts.
Elsewhere, Morocco had a tournament debut to forget as a brace from Paraguay’s Fatima Acosta handed the North Africans their first loss in the competition, with the game finishing 2-0.
