Ghana midfielder Elisha Owusu’s unfortunate own goal proved to be the turning point in AJ Auxerre’s 2-1 away defeat to Le Havre in their French Ligue 1 clash on Sunday.
The promoted side, still reeling from a 2-0 loss to Nantes the previous week, was hoping to bounce back with a positive result but ultimately fell short against their hosts.
Auxerre had taken the lead in the 18th minute through a superb free kick from Gaetan Perrin, who struck the ball from the edge of the box, sending it in off the inside of the right post, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
However, Owusu’s misfortune struck just five minutes later when he accidentally put a pass from one of the Le Havre attackers into his own net, levelling the scores.
The game took another turn for the worse for Auxerre on the eve of half-time when Ki-Jana Hoever received a second yellow card, leaving the team with a numerical disadvantage.
This proved to be a significant advantage for Le Havre, as Rassoul Ndiaye broke through, collected a brilliant pass, and produced a precise strike to beat the goalkeeper, finding the bottom left corner before Abdoulaye Toure sealed the 3-1 win converting from the spot.
For Elisha Owusu, it was a match he would want to quickly forget, as his own goal set the tone for a difficult outing. The Ghana international will look to bounce back quickly and regain his form as he prepares to join the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Despite the setback, Auxerre remains optimistic about their chances of survival in Ligue 1 this season, with manager Christophe Pélissier emphasising the need for his team to learn from their mistakes and continue working hard to secure positive results in the coming matches.
