Sunderland AFC have secured a loan deal for Ghana midfielder Salis Abdul Samed from French club RC Lens, according to Le Parisien and Foot Mercato.
The 24-year-old attracted interest from several Ligue 1 sides this summer, including FC Nantes, Stade Brestois, and AS Saint-Étienne. However, Abdul Samed is set for a new challenge in England’s Championship.
Samed fell out of favour under Lens’ new manager, Will Still, who deemed him surplus to requirements. Despite interest from French clubs, Abdul Samed will now link up with Sunderland’s new boss, Régis Le Bris, formerly of FC Lorient.
The loan deal does not include an option to buy for Sunderland. Abdul Samed is expected to finalise the move with a medical shortly. This loan provides him with a platform to reignite his career in England.
Salis Abdul Samed was brilliant vs PSG: starting the build up, winning the ball and recycling possession with purpose.
His ability on the ball made PSG’s press non existent on the day. Wonderful to watch.

Key points from Samed’s Lens career:
- Made 72 appearances, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist.
- Played a key role in Lens’ Champions League qualification during his first season.
- Earned a contract extension with a reported salary increase but struggled last season.
- Originally joined Lens from Clermont Foot for €5 million.
Despite his initial commitment to Lens until 2028, Abdul Samed seeks a fresh start and will look to prove himself in the English Championship.
