Executive Director of Parliamentary African Network, Sammy Obeng has said Speaker Bagbin could have issued less punishment rather than sacking the Sefwi Wiawso MP from the Chamber.
The MP, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie was walked out of the House by the Marshal on the Speaker’s order on Monday, July 22 after making a remark the Speaker regarded as “rude” and “disrespectful” towards him.
Dr. Kwaku Afriyie accused the Speaker of making a prejudicial comment in referring a letter about the nominees to the Supreme Court to the Appointment committee.
“Mr Speaker, with all due respect to your chair, this preliminary comment you are making is prejudicial and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said, thank you,” the MP said.
This comment was what infuriated the Speaker which caused the sacking of the MP from the Chamber.
However, Sammy Obeng despite his disagreement with the comment by the Sefwi Wiawso lawmaker, believes the Speaker “killed an ant with a sledge hammer.”
To Mr. Obeng, the Speaker’s decision was more of emotions in the situation.
“Usually, when somebody needs to be suspended from sittings or go out, Mr. Speaker would usually direct the person to remove himself or herself. It is when the person refuses that you order the Marshal to ‘forcibly’ remove him or her.
“Right from the very onset, ordering the Marshals to take him out and the manner in which it was done, I think there were more emotions with this particular situation. It could have been done on a better manner,” he stated on The Hot Edition on 3FM on Monday, July 22.
Mr. Obeng further noted that he finds nothing inappropriate with the Speaker’s statement for which the MP reacted to.
