A Professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo has eulogised the late President John Evans Atta Mills for his achievements.
Among the attributes of Prof Mills that Prof Gyampo touted was his desire to continue the projects started by his predecessors.
Prof Mills died on the seat as President on Tuesday 24 July 2012. He was 68 years.
Speaking during the 12th Atta Mills Memorial lecture at the University of Ghana in Accra on Friday, July 19, Prof Gyampo said “he endeavored to continue predecessors’ projects.”
He further stated that Prof Mills “promoted academic freedoms by not initiating intervention that interfered with academic especially the appointment of Vice Chancellors.”
Prof John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills (21 July 1944 – 24 July 2012) was a Ghanaian politician and legal scholar who served as President of Ghana from 2009 until his death in 2012.
He was inaugurated on 7 January 2009, having defeated the governing party candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 Ghanaian presidential election. He was previously the Vice-President from 1997 to 2001 under President Jerry Rawlings, and he contested unsuccessfully in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He was the first Ghanaian head of state to die in office.
