France’s coach Didier Deschamps has a message for those criticising his team’s style of play: if you’re bored, watch something else.
This comes as France prepare for their Euro 2024 semi-final against Spain amidst criticism for a perceived lack of excitement in their matches.
BBC pundit and former Premier League striker Chris Sutton recently said he would “close the curtains” if France were playing in his back garden, highlighting the sentiment of some detractors.
France have made it to the last four in Germany without scoring a goal from open play—two own goals and a penalty by Kylian Mbappe have been their only sources of scoring so far. They beat Portugal on penalties after a goalless draw in the quarter-final.
Addressing the criticism in Monday’s pre-match news conference, Deschamps said, “If you are bored, watch another game – you don’t have to watch us, it’s fine.”
He added, “Maybe it’s not the same as it was in the past, but we do have the capability to spark emotions and make lots of French men and women happy with our results, especially after a difficult period in our country.”
