Black Queens coach Nora Hauptle has revealed how the team has had to restructure their activities due to the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
After a five-year absence, the Black Queens finally secured a return to WAFCON. However, they now have to wait another year to compete in the tournament, as the Confederation of African Football has postponed it to 2025 due to a clash with the upcoming Olympics.
With no tournament to play this year, the Black Queens have arranged a friendly match against 2011 World Cup champions Japan on July 13th. Hauptle expressed how these changes have impacted their plans.
“The WAFCON was postponed to next July, Morocco, so we needed to reschedule with our planning.
“Firstly we play now with Japan, they’re top 7 of the world ranking, they’re beside Spain maybe the best sports possession team,” she said.
Revealing why they chose to compete against Japan, Hauptle revealed the need to know how the team has progressed.
“I said we want to have measurements with top of the world to see our strengths, what can we deliver on this level and what we still need to work on,” she added.
The October international window would also give Hauptle the chance to access and screen her squad ahead of the tournament.
