The Boston Celtics have secured their place in NBA history by defeating the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, clinching their record 18th championship title.
The Celtics’ victory on their home court at TD Garden gave them a 4-1 series win in the best-of-seven championship showdown.
Dallas had managed to stave off a sweep with a 122-84 victory in Game 4 on Friday, but the Celtics were undeterred.
Fueled by the support of their home fans, Boston’s top-seeded team was led by Jayson Tatum’s stellar 31-point performance.

Jaylen Brown, who played a crucial role with a standout defensive display against Dallas’ star Luka Doncic, was named the Finals MVP. Brown, who scored 21 points in the decisive game, emphasised the collective effort of his team. “It was a full team effort,” said Brown. “I share this with my brothers and my partner in crime Jayson Tatum – he was with me the whole way so we share this together.”
Celtics frustrates Mavericks
For Dallas, it was a night of frustration, particularly for Kyrie Irving, who had previously played for the Celtics. Irving was heckled by the Boston crowd and managed only 15 points in the game. The Mavericks struggled from the outset, trailing 67-46 at halftime with Irving and Doncic limited to just 14 points combined in the first quarter.
Despite a brief rally in the latter stages of the third quarter, the Mavericks were unable to overcome the Celtics’ dominant performance. Boston maintained a 19-point lead heading into the final quarter, sealing the game and the series.
This championship marks their first in 16 years and pushes them ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers in the record books, with Boston now holding 18 titles to the Lakers’ 17. The win not only adds to the storied legacy of the Celtics but also cements the team’s resurgence under the leadership of Tatum and Brown.
