Anti-corruption campaigner and co-chair of Citizen’s Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu, has stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s perspective on the fight against corruption is not reflective of reality.
The President during the commissioning of the newly built office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice, ‘The Law House’, in Accra on Monday, June 10, noted that the office complex is a sign of his government’s commitment to fighting corruption.
Additionally, President Akufo-Addo commended Attorney-General Godfred Dame as “one of the many worthy products of M/S Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.” law firm in the face of growing pressure to dismiss Mr Dame over his alleged misconduct in the ambulance purchase trial.
Also, the President responded to the “Clearing agent” tag by the leader of the main opposition party, former President John Dramani Mahama.
President Akufo-Addo said that for his part in fighting corruption, he will not “set aside due process and the rules of natural justice on the altar of the fight against corruption.”
However, Mr Senanu in an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM’s morning show ‘Sunrise’ on Tuesday, noted, among other things, that sometimes, unfortunately, the President’s speechwriters may want to project a certain narrative that contradicts reality on the ground.
He further indicated that it would have been better for the President not to have touched on the issue of fighting corruption.
Asked whether the President was truthful in his assertion or if he spoke what Ghanaians wanted to hear, Edem Senanu emphasized that “it’s neither speaking what everybody wants him to say nor the truth.”
He continued, “We want to be real at the level of citizens. We clearly see increasing numbers of scandals and procurement challenges that have not augured well.”

According to Mr Senanu, President Akufo-Addo at the moment is not “reflecting the reality on the ground,” adding that “I would rather he had not chosen the occasion to comment on corruption.”
“Unfortunately, sometimes it may be the scriptwriters and those who are informing it but no, his perspective does not reflect what is going on at the moment,” he added.
The Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, despite the assurances to fight corruption in the public sector, has been overwhelmed by scandals over the last seven and a half years.
The issue of soul-sourcing government projects remains a tough opponent to defeat.
Recently, the executive handpicked a week-old company, NextGen InfraCo, as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to handle the country’s 5G network rollout.
The deal has raised widespread criticism but Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has justified the government’s choice to award the 5G licensing contract to NextGen InfraCo
The Ablekuma West MP defended that NextGen InfraCo was purposely created to handle the 5G rollout. She noted that no other company could manage the rollout at that time.
