Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency in the Western Region has visited victims of the Ngyiresia premix fuel disaster who are currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Joe Ghartey, who was out of jurisdiction during the time of the incident also met with some bereaved families and commiserated with them.
A third victim of the disaster, Isaac Blankson, 55 was confirmed dead on Tuesday, 21st May 2024 after being transferred to the Korle Bu Hospital for treatment.
His death comes after Joseph Adom 15, and Justice Dadzie 7, died a few hours after the disaster.
Three victims are still in critical condition and receiving treatment at Effia Nkwanta Hospital, five of them have since been discharged whilst two are at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
After visiting the victims at the Korle Bu Hospital, Mr. Joe Ghartey expressed satisfaction with the level of care being provided by medical practitioners at the Reconstructive Plastic and Burns Centre.
He told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show that he has no doubts the victims are in good hands.
“It was an honor and privilege to meet the CEO of Korle Bu, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, Dr. Divine Kwame, head of the Reconstructive Plastic and Burns Centre, and Dr Ahensen of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre. This is when I went to visit the victims of the recent fire incident at Ngyiresia in the Essikado-Ketan Constituency on 21st May 2024. I was left with no doubt that the patients were in good hands. God bless and protect the doctors.
“I have also had interaction with Uncle Akyere Me Nyansa, the father of one of the victims. I wish her and all others who were affected by the recent fire incident a speedy recovery,” he indicated.
He also promised to support victims currently receiving treatment at the Effiankwanta and Saint Benedict Hospital whilst making plans to return to the community as soon as possible to ascertain the extent of the damage.
Fishermen at Ngyiresia have over the years been transporting their barrels of premix fuel to the beach by rolling them through a footpath in another part of the community, densely populated by fishmongers.
This mode of transporting the barrels has been the case for some time due to the lack of an accessible route.
For every sea expedition, tens of barrels get rolled, for some 500 meters downhill to the beach. This is regardless of the naked fire around and occasioned by the activities of fishmongers.
Sadly, last Saturday will turn out to be perhaps the last time the fishermen will have to use such a mode of transportation.
Reports have it that, this particular consignment of premix fuel was bought from elsewhere due to the scarcity of the product at Ngyiresia.
The Ngyiresia Community Premix Fuel Pump, where the explosion occurred, is a minute’s walk.
The last time an explosion occurred in the Western Region, four persons died, and several others were maimed for life.
This was at a quarry site at Anto-Aboso in the Shama district.
