The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) says motorists and other road users must make way for motorcades carrying VVIPs and VIPs, not only because the law says so, but also a show of courtesy and respect for national political leaders.
This is a caution to road users who refuse to give right of way to presidential convoy, VIP motorcades and emergency vehicles.
The NRSA said lead vehicles of presidential or VIP motorcade use sirens to warn other road users of the fact that they are approaching, so they make way.
These lead vehicles mostly occupied by security capos are expected to optimize the level of safety and efficiency required for the President when travelling.
However, a section of the public appears to normally ignore these security protocols as they hinder the operations of presidential convoys resulting in fatal accidents.
Public Relations Officer of NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, reacting to the menace in an interview with Onua News expressed fret over the presidential convoy accident on Sunday, May 19, which took away one life.
She described the accident involving the presidential convoy at Bonsu Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Road as unfortunate, wondering how the KIA Rhino truck allegedly crossed the presidential convoy which was returning from Kumasi.
“The road traffic regulations allow certain vehicles to use sirens which includes the presidential vehicles or convoy, ambulance, hearse, bullion vans used by banks and state agencies. But the reason why I believe Ghanaians are refusing to respect vehicles with siren is the fact that such privilege has been abused,” she revealed.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Sateckla has maintained that it is the international norm and courtesy accorded to leaders worldwide, and Ghana is no exception.
She insisted it is an offence for anyone or a driver to refuse to give way to siren vehicles that provide essential or emergency services especially a presidential convoy.
She was quick to advocate for road users who flout the road traffic regulations to be prosecuted and punished to help eliminate indiscipline on the road.
