Inaki Williams has shrugged off conversations suggesting that his decison to switch allegiance to the country of his parents will be deeply regretted following his poor run in the Black Stars jersey.
The Athletic Bilbao forward switched nationality from Spoian to Ghana in 2022 and has since been a reguklar member of the Ghana national team.
However, his performnace has fallen short of expectation with the 29-year ld only scoring once in his 17 appearances.
Speaking about his time so far with the team, Williams says the decision has rather elevated his career and has put him in his ‘best moments’
“I would never have imagined this. I had to make a decision and I don’t regret being able to represent the country of my parents and my family, to go back to my origins, to be able to travel more and see my loved ones in Ghana. It’s true that things didn’t work out as we’d all hoped, but it’s true that on a sporting and personal level, it helped me a lot. In fact, I think I’m in one of my best moments thanks to this decision,” he told Club del Deportista.
Inaki Williams’ only goal for Ghana came in a crucial moment when the Black Stars hosted Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He scored the only goal of the game at the Baba Yara Stadium in the dying moments to seal all three points for the Black Stars.
Unlike his unwanted run for the Black Stars, the attacker is in fine form having already notched an impressive 11 goals with five assists in 31 appearances accross all competitions.
He is currently eying the Copa del Rey trophy on Saturday as Athletic Bilbao gear up to square off against RCD Mallorca in the final.
