Ghanaian music producer, Kwesi Ernest has highlighted how technology has brought some modifications to happenings within the music industry.
Speaking to Nana Ama McBrown on Onua Showtime, a program aired on Onua TV, the leading voice in the Ghanaian Gospel Music Industry pointed out some of the differences between the industry then, comparing them to current times.
“The difference is that back then, it was more of craft and talent. In the past, if you were not a musician, you wouldn’t go close to a microphone. However, in recent times, the system is different because now, even for someone who doesn’t have a voice, when they enter the studio, they sing whatever and it gets recorded after which the machine will then work on the voice. This has made the financial aspect of music difficult. It has become very expensive unlike before,” he stated.
When the issue of the state of the economy was raised, suggesting that maybe it could be considered as an alternative cause of why the music had become expensive, the producer reacted by saying that it was “subjective”.
“The impact of revenue in current times is subjective because the system used to operate music now gives a lot of marketing options. Sometimes, the revenue generated is not like before. The system doesn’t meet how you are spending. You can spend more but have the money coming in months later,” he indicated using Youtube as an example of a marketing platform that delays the inflow of cash earned.
He then opined that by virtue of all these happenings, investors have been a bit laidback because they are afraid to put their money in that space.
“This is what makes investors scared to push their money into music because after they sit down to consider the nature of the system and the cash inflow, the level of delay is too long,” he added.
