ON Y VA! organized the maiden edition of its French Spelling Bee competition (Spellaberate) on Friday, June 9 at the GECC Auditorium (GIMPA).
Thirty-four students participated in the competition sponsored by the French Embassy in Ghana with TV3 as a media partner.
These students came from schools which included St. Francis School, Happy Heart School, Golden Crown School, Oyster Academy, Little Flower Montessori, Mount Zion Methodist School, Twinkle Star School, His Majesty Experimental School.
The dignitaries present included the French Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Jules-Armand Aniambossou, the French Language Policy Officer from the French Embassy in Ghana, Lou-Alma Jacob-Duvernet, the National French Coordinator, Tchitchi Kondo-Ayiga (Ministry of Education), a representative from the Embassy of Niger in Ghana, Justine Gegout, and Yawo Apelete Doku from France Volontaires, an organization which helps students to volunteer in France.
Miss Edna Aido and Mr. Michael Kouani Dogor were the MCs for the event.
The event started at 10:30am with an opening prayer from Mr. Joel Mensah Asmah.
Then, the President of the ON Y VA Association, Seth Kwame Appiah-Kubi, announced the purpose of gathering.
In his speech, he stated that one of the main goals of this event was to enhance students’ ability to correctly pronounce the French alphabets, thus, making pronunciation of words in French very easy for them.
He also encouraged the participants to give out their best.
There was a speech from the French Ambassador to Ghana.
He commended the Pesident of ON Y VA! for such a wonderful initiative, mentioning the fact that he had never seen an initiative of that sort and urged him to keep up the good work.
He also emphasized on the fact that the French Embassy is going to support ON Y VA! whenever possible.
He then touched on the importance of being able to speak French and he also stated that he would be hosting most of the kids present at his residence during the French National Day (Bastille Day) on Friday, July 14.
A speech from the National French Coordinator then followed. He also commended the President of ON Y VA! for such a great initiative. He reiterated that the Ministry of Education would always support ON Y VA! in anyway they can.
The Volunteering Development Officer of France Volontaires, Yawo Apelete Doku, was also called upon to say something about the organization after which a musical interlude followed.
Miss Wendy-Delmin performed a song titled ‘Dream Big’.
After the musical interlude, there was a break for photographs to be taken and also for the contestants to refresh themselves.
After the break, the quiz unfolded. The quiz mistress for the day was Miss Precious Klu, assisted by Miss Mavis Sakyi.
The jury included Mr. Pascal Kafui Oclou, Mr. Emmanuel Fianyeku, Miss Nana Yaa Gyamfi and Mr. Kwabena Touissant.
After several interesting and competitive rounds, Michael Abeka-Daniels and Maud Agbakpey from Mount Zion Methodist School emerged the winner and runner-up respectively.
Maud Agbakpey also emerged the Most Outstanding Female Contestant.
There were amazing prizes such as cash, certificates and French reading materials for the winners and all who contested.
