Western Region Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association Desmond Cudjoe has stressed on the need for corporate entities to include a dedicated line in their budget to finance the capacity building of journalists for them to be able to report accurately on their operations.
He is convinced such knowledge will enable journalists to be familiar with their operations to guide them on how to report on the entities.
“As a Chairman, I have had instances where some companies have called me about some reportage of members. Sometimes, I must admit that if the journalist had some appreciable knowledge of the company and its dealings, the story would have come out differently. And the only way to help address that is for the company to consider capacity building for journalists on their own operations.”
He furthered, “I believe we should have that discussion for companies to recognise the good in such venture which will go a long way to also help project companies. Because, when the journalist is armed with the right information the end result is very productive.”
Mr. Cudjoe made the observation when Twyford Ceramics made a cheque donation to the Association.
The donation follows an appeal by the Association to the company to help renovate the Western Region Press Center and make it more congenial for activities.
The President entreated corporate entities to see journalists as partners and work towards the mutual benefits of each other.
Presenting the cheque, the Commercial Manager of Keda Ceramics, David Wei, pledged the company’s readiness to assist in putting the center into good shape.
He indicated the company aims at impacting positively on its area of operations and having good partnerships.
Human Resource Manager David Yevugah, on his part, indicated that journalists play an important role in the development of the country’s democracy and, as such, it was in the right direction to contribute to their growth.
“We are therefore happy to partner journalists in the Western region to grow. We believe we can do more to support the progress of your work in the future,” he indicated.
Kenkey Party
In a related development, the Association on May Day organised a Kenkey party at its refurbished press centre.
The kenkey party created a platform for journalists and some corporate entities to fraternise.
It was also to offer journalists and others in communications roles a unique opportunity to register to join the association.
Some retired journalists were awarded for their contributions to the noble profession.
