Nutritionist Fred Amese has refuted the general assertion that drinking water while having a meal is bad, arguing that it is rather helpful to be sipping water intermittently while having a meal.
He explained to Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show that, drinking water before a meal is good but while you are eating you need to have a glass of water by yourself and sip intermittently.
“What we don’t advise is you gulp a lot of water while eating but don’t prevent yourself from sipping water because the sipping helps to digest the food properly. That is why even the body itself produces saliva in the mouth to help mix with the food” Fred explained.
Nutritionist Amese added “You need some amount of water in your food. We don’t advise that you take in a lot of water while eating but while you are eating you should be sipping water intermittently to also help prevent choking. In fact people have choked on food and died so it is not advisable that you don’t drink water while eating and have to wait for half an hour, it is advisable to sip water intermittently while eating”.
He mentioned that additionally the water helps prevent constipation and also reduces the amount of food one consumes as such reduces the amount of calories one takes in.
According to nutritionist Fred Amese, a female adult needs a minimum of five of 500 mil sachets water and the male adult needs a minimum of seven of the 500 mil sachets of water but it is better to drink more.
Every essential organ of the human body needs water to function well especially the muscles need water to be able to move correctly as well as the collective tissues and all the organs in the body including the brain need water even the bones which are hard need water.
Fred Amese emphasised that there is a direct correlation between water and weight loss and admonished people who are embarking on weight loss exercise to consume more water.
He warned that exercising without having enough water in the body will strain the muscles and because of the excretion through sweating will lead to dehydration. Therefore people exercising should drink a lot of water to replace that which has been lost.
“Water is very important as far as weight loss is concern. When it comes to weight loss, one thing a lot of people will do is exercise and in exercising you are moving the muscles but without enough water in your body the muscle cannot even move correctly hence you will be experiencing muscle crumps” the nutritionist cautioned.
