Medeama coach David Duncan says he is a two-time Ghanaian league champion and that he will write about it in his autobiography, despite the fact that it is false.
Duncan is currently one of the most experienced coaches in Ghana’s top flight, having been coaching since 2000.
He has, however, yet to win an official trophy.
Duncan hasn’t had much luck with trophies, particularly in the Ghana Premier League, where he has finished second five times.
The former Ghana assistant coach finished second twice during his first stint at AshantiGold between 2006 and 2008, but the 2006/07 season hurts him the most because he believes he and his players deserved the title more than winners Hearts of Oak.
In the 2009/10 season, he returned to Ashgold for a second stint and suffered another heartbreak.
He was beaten to the league title by the then-newly promoted Aduana Stars on a head-to-head rule after they both finished with 53 points.
Duncan’s team needed a point at Berekum Chelsea on the final day of the season to be crowned champions, but they were defeated 1-0.
“In your books or records you would say I have never won the Premier League in Ghana but in my perspective, I won the 2006/07 Premier League. I won the 2009/10 Premier League. The powers that be chose to let the league go some other way. If I am going to write a book which I will pretty soon, I won’t state anywhere that I hadn’t won the Premier League,” Duncan told 3Sports.
Duncan is hoping to win the trophy for the first time this season, and he’s off to a good start with his new club Medeama.
They have six points from a possible six after beating Legon Cities and Real Tamale United.
He was appointed late and was not involved in the recruitment process, but he likes what he’s seen so far and hopes the players will continue to work hard.
“It’s quite a good team. They are prepared to learn. They see me as their gaffer without any inhibition. They give me the respect I deserve. They think that they had a great deal to learn if they stay focused if they take my directive and instructions as they come. They haven’t complained so far with the kind of regime we are putting them through,” he said.
Duncan has also coached Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Great Olympics, where he began his coaching career, and Sekondi Hasaacas in addition to AshantiGold and Medeama.
He has a short stint with Free State Stars in South Africa.
Duncan has managed Ghana’s U-17 and U-23 teams, as well as serving as the Black Stars’ Assistant Coach for a year.
