The Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery has advised refugees in Ghana to be self-reliant even as Ghana continues to be a safe haven for them.
Speaking at the commemoration of the 2022 World Refugee day at the Ampain Refugee Camp in the Western Region, he disclosed that about one thousand, two hundred Ivorian refugees have voluntarily left to their home country this year.
In 2011, the government and Ghana refugee Board established the Ampain Refugee camp to accommodate refugees fleeing from Cote D’Ivoire and that has been their home since.
Mr Ambrose Dery commended La Cote d’Ivoire for working with the international community and countries hosting their nationals as well as the government of Ghana for providing a humanitarian corridor for the Ivorians to return home even when the Ghana’s borders were closed at the height of the pandemic.
He advised the refugees to be self-reliant in the country, as Ghana continues to be a safe haven for them.
The 2022 world refugee day celebration was on the theme, Whoever, Wherever, whenever; everyone has the right to seek Safety.
“Let me at this juncture assure all refugees that Ghana is going to approach you humanely, we are going to approach it with love, we are not going to throw anybody out as if you are an outcast.
“I will further encourage you to be self reliance and contribute towards national development whole we ensure refugees go about their lives in safety and dignity government does not lose sight of its responsibility of guarantee the security of the state.”
