According to organisers of Asabaako, renowned Ghanaian entrepreneur, DJ and music producer died in the early hours of March 6, 2022.
Taking to their Instagram, organisers reported that DJ Rab Bakari drowned at the Busua Beach on Sunday morning at the Asabaako festival. They wrote;
“It is with deep sadness to announce the death of our dear friend, mentor and pillar in Ghana’s music history, Rab Bakari.
Rab was instrumental in the creation of hiplife music which is the foundation of modern Ghanaian music. He always offered words of encouragement and was instrumental in birthing Asa Baako.
He passed away at Asa Baako this morning on Busua Beach and we will honour him tonight at the Jungle Party with a two-minute silence and dance to some of the music that he produced and loved. We lost a legend today. Rab, we know that your spirit will be with us tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Before his death, DJ Rab took to social media to share his excitement at celebrating Ghana’s Independence in the motherland. He shared a pic on Instagram with the caption ” 6th March* I would rather be on ‘The Beach’ this Independence [from the goddam #British monarchy] Day. #Ghana (Yessir! I’m here!)”
Rab Bakari was a music professional from Ghana with over 10 years of working relationship with Universal Music Group (USA). He also has hands-on experience as an authentic New York Hip Hop creator as a host and panellist at SXSW Music (USA), Geekend (USA); Kenya Music Week; WOMEX (Hungary); lectures at New York University (USA), Social Media Week (Nigeria); CMJ Music Marathon (USA); Cariforum EU Business Forum (Jamaica); Ghana DJ Awards and AFRIMA (Nigeria).
DJ Rab was writing a book about music scenes in urban African metro areas and his contribution to hiplife, a distinctly Ghanaian fusion of highlife and hip-hop.
