Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has stated that even though it has been sixteen months since the World Health Organization(WHO) declared the coronavirus a pandemic, which has brought fiscal strain on world economies, the country has reason to be optimistic and hopeful.
He said based on key economic indicators, the country is on track to recovering from the most difficult crisis since the post world war era.
The Finance Minister pointed out that in the next few months the ministry of health aims to embark on an aggressive vaccination programme which will ensure the country achieves herd immunity and break the chain of infections from the coronavirus in the country.
He said the government of President Akufo-Addo has provided decisive leadership to Ghanaians, especially in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring Ghanaians are safe from the ravages of the pandemic.
Mr Ofori-Atta assured Ghanaians that President Akufo-Addo and his NPP-led government promises to leave Ghana at the end of his tenure, a strong nation at peace with itself and the world around it.
He said the government is pushing the boundaries of the country’s economic activities from the center of a fast integrated single market for the continent of Africa.
Mr Ofori-Atta in reading the mid-year budget in parliament on Wednesday, July 29, said if the government stay on course, few years from now, within this decade, the country’s strategic place at the center of the African Continental Free Trade Area(AfCFTA) of one billion consumers and some 2.5 trillion gross domestic products(GDP) will become a reality.
He said the government is on course to establishing Ghana as the commercial and investment hub of the continent.
Mr Ofori-Atta said the government began to set the country back on the transformation track with a bold vision of “Ghana Beyond Aid”. He said the recovery is on despite the ravaging effects of the pandemic to achieve a strong and sustainable economy.
He said the government chose to be bold in crafting a 2021 budget that deals with the past, delivers opportunities in the present, whilst investing in the future in a responsible and interconnected manner.
“It has been sixteen months since 11th March 2020 when WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. However, as a country, we have reason to be optimistic and hopeful, based on key indicators we are on track to recovering from the most difficult crisis in the post world war era”, the Finance Minister pointed out to Ghanaians.
