Elizabeth Hayford Asare has appealed for sanitary pads to free for all girls in the country. She made this statement on TV3’s NewDay morning show with Cookie Tee in an interview promoting menstrual hygiene to the public ahead of celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene on May 28th.
She complained about how in previous campaigns for free condom was heralded. But there are no free sanitary pads.
She said, “I appeal that sanitary pads should be made free. Can you imagine there were campaigns for condoms to be free, and it was free? But sanitary pads are not. Having sex is a choice, but menstruation is not, and girls need sanitary towels to stay in school. So it should be made free.”
The Abiola Bawuah Foundation is championing menstrual health and hygiene. They hope to educate the girl child on issues associated with menstruation. And how to care for themselves before, during and after menstruation. The campaign will distribute sanitary kits to girls in the Ga South municipality.
“Abiola foundation is focused on supporting brainy but needy students. Tomorrow we are going to Ga south to distribute 300 sanitary kits to all girls. The kits contain other stuff like toothpaste, soap, tissue and sanitiser to keep them safe in school.”
As a Member of the board, Elizabeth is disturbed about the high cost of sanitary pads, which makes girls use Parts of clothes, rags or any other material to support them through the cycle.
She said that if sanitary pads were free, young girls will not go through the trauma of finding pad-like material, which leaves them with infections at the expense of their health.
She asked the general public to do more charitable work to help support menstrual hygiene education in their various communities.
