People are dipping their testicles in soy sauce- and some claim they can taste salt inside their mouths!
Tiktok was flooded with ‘testicle’ experiments after a user claimed to have tasted salt after dipping his testicles in soy sauce. The viral video on TikTok has men dropping their testicles in food, mostly soy sauce, as a taste test.
Unfortunately, testicles do not have taste buds. But they do have taste receptors. According to a urologist, a tricky difference between taste receptors in the testicles and those on the tongue. The tongue responds to taste to decide if food is edible. Those on the testicles are not connected to the taste centre of the brain called the gustatory cortex. So the testicles cannot tell the sweet, saltiness or savoury flavours of food.
But why do testicles need taste receptors? The receptors function inside the testicles to react to chemical compounds to decide whether to make less or more testosterone and sperms.
A study published in 2013 in the Molecular Human Reproduction journal found that “male testes do indeed have taste receptors. These receptors are also in the digestive system, respiratory system, brain and spermatozoa.”
TikTok-ers who claimed to have tasted salt after dipping their balls into soy sauce may have experienced a placebo effect. Lewis, an experimenter, said he felt a strange sensation after putting his testicles in soy sauce, but not the normal saltiness in his mouth. He said that his senses might have heightened because he was putting his balls in an unfamiliar place.
