The 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, is not convinced with the seeming basis upon which the Supreme Court assessed his petition.
He said it appears the justices of the apex court of Ghana based their dismissal of his petition on the testimony given by the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who was the first witness for the petitioner.
But Mr Mahama insisted that having followed the entire proceedings of the trial, Mr Asiedu Nketia was taken out of context.
“I followed the proceedings of this petition and listened to the testimony of our General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, from beginning to end. I am quite alarmed at the mutilation of his testimony in the Supreme Court ruling,” Mr Mahama complained.
He said the judgement read by the President of the Court, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, virtually made General Mosquito, as he is popularly called, appear as if a star witness for the respondents.
“Many answers of his testimonies in cross-examination were taken out of context to create the basis for the dismissal of our election petition.”
Mr Mahama expressed these sentiments while addressing journalists at his Cantonments office in Accra Thursday.
It was the first time he was commenting on the judgement delivered earlier in the day by the Court. His petition was unanimously dismissed.
“The petitioner has not produced any evidence to rebut the presumptions created by the publication of CI 135. We are therefore of no reason to order a rerun. We accordingly dismiss the petition,” Justice Anin-Yeboah stated on Thursday, March 4.
But Mr Mahama said he disagreed with the process of the trial and even the judgement.
“Much as I am aware that we are legally bound by the decision of the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court of Ghana, I disagree with the process of the trial and the ruling of the court,” he said.
He indicated that at the appropriate time, the legal team led by Tsatsu Tsikata will come out with “detailed comments” on the judgement.
