The vetting of the ministerial nominees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to start today, February 10, 2021 at the DF Annan auditorium in Parliament.
The Minister-designate for Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, who is also Member of Parliament for Dormaa Central Constituency, and the Minister-designate for National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, will begin the exercise.
They will face an even Vetting and Appointments Committee of 13 Majority and Minority members apiece.
The Committee will be chaired – for the second time in a row – by First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, who is also MP for Bekwai Constituency. Ranking Member is Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu, who is also assuming that role for the second consecutive time.
The Committee is expected to finish its work within the next three weeks – a period the main plenary will not be sitting as a result of Covid-19.
“It is hoped that within this period of time of adjournment,” Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin announced on Tuesday as he closed down the legislative, “the Appointments Committee will commence consideration and public hearing of the President’s nominees for ministerial appointments.”
“By the end of the three weeks, the Appointments Committee would have submitted its report on the referral for the consideration of the House.”
Following Messrs Agyeman Manu and Kan Dapaah will be Dominic Nitiwul and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who have been nominated as Minister of Defence and Minister of Education respectively. They will face the Committee on Thursday, February 11.
In all, not more than 86 ministers and deputy ministers will be vetted as President Akufo-Addo has resolved not to go beyond that number in a move to downsize his government.
The vetting is expected to end on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 with the Minister-designate for Western North Region Richard Obeng.
