I’ll be back running for Ghana again – Martha Bissah
Ghana’s Youth Olympics gold medalist Martha Bissah says she will be back running again for Ghana in no time but stated that a lot had to be done to salvage the state of the Ghana Athletics Association.
Martha graduated from the Norfolk State University in the United States with honours earlier this week and it was met with open arms by many Ghanaians.
Many remember her exploits from 2014 when she won the country’s first gold medal at the Olympics at any level.
She moved to the United States a few years back and has managed to keep a low profile with a sole aim trying to get better as an athlete.
Two years after winning the gold medal, Martha was banned from the Ghana Athletics Association after a dispute with its executives.
The athlete says she will come back to run for Ghana again but the Association needs to be fixed.
“Other athletes from other countries have their Associations checking on them and fending for them. I do not have that. I am not saying they do not do it for others but I have never had that,” she said.
“I love Ghana. Ghana is my country. I was born in Ghana. My friends, family and loved ones are all in Ghana. I am proud to be a Ghanaian but it will depend. As time goes on, we will know but trust me I love running for Ghana.”
Martha says she is still training for the Olympics Games next year and is hoping she can make the time to secure qualification to the grand stage.
She wants the president to step in and save the sport as she believes it is on a decline.
“Something needs to be done about that Association. At GAA, something needs to be done and I urge the president of Ghana to do something about it. I really want him to investigate the Association and make things right.”
