Deputy Defence Minister allays fears of post-electoral violence
The Deputy Minister of Defence and outgoing Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North, Major (rtd) Derek Oduro, has assured the people of Ghana of maximum peace despite the opposition’s resolve to contest results of the just-ended elections.
The minister further urged Ghanaians to ignore comments made by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, that the nation will be plunged into chaos should the Electoral Commission (EC) fail to overturn the declaration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as winner.
Mr Asiedu Nketia on Thursday, December 10 made claims considered by many as inciteful as he stated that “bullets do not discriminate”.
Speaking on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma, Major (rtd) Oduro assured that “the state security agencies are working and apt to the task to maintain the peaceful ambience Ghana has been enjoying”.
He further advised the youth especially to desist from teasing and attacking opponents in order to lessen the boiling tension the country is faced with.
“One group of persons cannot fight,” he observed. “It takes two to fight so let’s all be law-abiding and maintain Ghana as the beacon of peace in Africa.”
Leadership of the major opposition party, NDC, have since disregarded the verdict of the 2020 elections, which they allege is full of irregularities and inconsistencies, a situation many Ghanaians find fuelling tension among the populace.
The Deputy Defence Minister cautioned that “the military is on top of security and anyone who dares to plunge the country into chaos will be dealt with drastically”.
