COVID: 30,564 passengers tested so far after reopen of KIA, 92 test positive – Akufo-Addo

Since the reopening of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on September 1, a total of 30,564 passengers who arrived in the country have been tested for coronavirus, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed. 

Out of this number, he said, ninety two have tested positive for the virus. These are all asymptotic cases, the president added.

Addressing the nation on Sunday October 18, Mr Akufo-Addo said “Following the provision of testing facilities which ensured the speed and accuracy  of covid-19  testing  Kotoka International Airport  was reopened on  1^st September  2020.

“It has been six weeks of reopening and a total of 30,564 passengers have been tested  from which ninety two have tested positive .

“All ninety two are asymptomatic cases  whose status, but for  the tests  would not have been detected  and would have spread the disease among the rest of the population.”

Mr Akufo-Addo further told the nation that a zero active case of coronavirus in Ghana is his target in spite of the success in containing the virus.

He noted that although Ghana has done well in tackling the pandemic, the virus is still lurking around.

To that end, he has urged all Ghanaians to “continue to comply with the measures put in place to deal with the virus. This is the surest way by which we can defeat the virus.”

“Zero active cases must be the goal,” the president added.

Regarding covid-19 death rate in Ghana, he said “The rate of death 0.5 per cent continues to remain very low.

“Thirteen more deaths have occurred bringing the total number of deaths tragically to 310 out of a total number of  510,074 tested.”
