The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has instituted a Covid-9 voluntary testing for corporate institutions in a drive to manage its spread in the area.
In a press release, dated 21st May, 2020 and signed by its Public Relations Officer, John Laste, it rebuffs an allegation on a news website that 8 members of its staff had tested positive for the coronavirus after a compulsory testing of all its staff.
The release, titled- RE: EIGHT STAFF OF STMA ALLEGEDLY TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19, states that, 22 people had tested positive out of a voluntary testing of about 268 people from the assembly and other public institutions.
“This proactive decision to test all staff of the Assembly was taken following the recording of cases in the Metropolis as well as recorded institutional infections in Tema and Eastern region,” it stated.
Though not all the staff took part in the voluntary testing, the statement was surprised at the publication.
“Considering the emotional and psychological impacts the said publication has caused to our staff and their relatives as well as its factual inaccuracies, management of the Assembly has referred the said publication to its legal department for advice”, it said.
In the meantime, the Assembly has invited the corporate institutions to take advantage of the voluntary testing to make the metropolis safer.
“We wish to urge all corporate institutions in the Metropolis to contact the Metro Health directorate for the necessary arrangements to undertake voluntary testing for their staff and if possible, their families. This will ensure that we all as much as possible contribute to the fight against the spread of COVID-19 in the Metropolis and Ghana as a whole”, it stated.
