The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr. K.K. Sarpong has been dragged to the Supreme Court for his continuous stay in office.
A private citizen, Eric Edem Agbana who brought the suit against the GNPC boss argues that the latter’s age disqualifies him from occupying that office.
In a suit filed on October 18, Mr. Agbana wants “a declaration that upon true and proper interpretation of Article 199(1)(4) of the 1992 constitution, the Defendant has exceeded the age limit provided for by the constitution for public servants”.
He also wants an order, directed at Mr. Sarpong, to return all salaries, allowances and benefits he obtained from the Ghana National Petroleum Commission from the date of attaining the age of sixty – five years to date.
“An order for the Defendant to resign as soon as possible from his position as CEO of Ghana National Petroleum Commission,” one of his reliefs noted.
KK Sarpong’s appointment
In February 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo appointed Sarpong as Acting chief executive officer of GNPC. He replaced Alex Mould who had served as CEO since 2013.
Until his appointment, Dr Sarpong was the Chair of the Board of Directors of the defunct Royal Bank. Dr Sarpong has served in a number of executive, non-executive and advisory positions in many organisations, including the GCB Bank, the Merchant Bank now UMB among others.
Dr Sarpong is a Chartered Accountant, and holds a PhD in Industrial and Business Studies from the University of Warwick; M.Acc in International Accounting and Finance from the University of Glasgow.
