A former Vice Chairperson of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Rodaline Imoro Ayana, has raised concerns about the government’s decision to use drones to deliver medical essentials to health facilities in remote areas.
The project whose test-run at the New Tafo Government Hospital in the Eastern region was successful, has officially been launched Wednesday.
The launch marks the commencement of a $12.5 million deal the government of Ghana reached with US firm, Zipline, to have essential medical supplies delivered to health facilities in remotes areas by drones.
But speaking on TV3’s New Day Wednesday, Ms Rodaline, though commends the government for the initiative, is skeptical it will serve the needs of the health facilities.
“When it comes to health issues every effort the government puts in is welcomed, but whether it is the priority I have my doubts”, she said.
She is particularly worried that the new technology may not help the needs of some of the hospitals including the New Tafo Hospital where the test run was conducted.
Ms Rodaline observed that while government is praising a successful test-run of the project, it should be mindful of two surgical theaters at the facility which she claims are not functional.
“New Tafo had two theatres not working. For me, getting a fridge that can store blood is even better,” she said.
She also questioned the sustainability of the project.
Meanwhile, board chairman of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku constituency, Dr. Bernard Oko-Boye, concedes the project may not solve all the problems in the health sector.
