The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) says it is ready to facilitate a dialogue between the two leading parties in the country to find a lasting solution to the upsurge of political militia.
On the back of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s call to the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress to take steps towards disbanding their militia groups, the NCCE said it will extend a helping hand.
“In this regard, the Commission after multiple stakeholder engagements, is poised to facilitate a process of dialogue among the parties and relevant stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the menace of political violence and associated party militia activity,” the NCCE said.
In its statement issued Friday, the NCCE asked the political parties to act in good faith in seeking national interest above partisan interest.
It also charged Ghanaians to rally behind civil society organisations and state institutions like the NCCE in finding a lasting solution to the menace of political militia.
Leaked Ofosu Ampofo tape
Meanwhile the NCCE has condemned a leaked audiotape alleged to contain the voice of NDC Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo allegedly plotting with some others within the NDC instigate violence.
In the said tape, the NDC Chairman is alleged to have made statements at a meeting that have the potential to threaten the security of individuals, the State, and elections. The voice on the tape is also heard asking NDC communicators to smear the EC chairperson and Nana Akufo-Addo.
“The Commission unequivocally condemns the contents of the tape. The NCCE reminds the NDC and all political parties to conduct their activities in accordance with the tenets of the 1992 Constitution and the law,” it said.
It advised that “unguarded utterances that have the potential to create fear and panic should be condemned in no uncertain terms by all and not be allowed to fester in Ghana’s democracy,” the NCCE stated.
The Commission commended the police CID for inviting Mr. Ampofo for questioning over the issue, and called on every Ghanaian to uphold the rule of law and not be seen engaging in any activity which seeks to violate the laws of the county
