The overlord of Kusaug traditional area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II has presented assorted food items and toiletries worth 1000 cedis to some 283 refugees at Widnaba in the Bawku West district of the Upper East region.
The refugees, made up of 38 men, 83 female and 162 children arrived in Ghana last month following a chieftaincy dispute in the Zoaga community in Burkina Faso.
A dispute between two royal gates in the area sparked the renewed the chieftaincy crisis at a shrine resulting to the death of people, which caused others to flee to Ghana.
They have since their arrival in Ghana been accommodated by the Bawku West District Assembly with support from residents of Widnaba and chiefs in the district.
Adequate relief items were presented to them by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).The overlord explained his gesture is to complement the efforts of NADMO and the Bawku West District Assembly.
A speech read on his behalf by Richard Ayabilla Akumbas, said he sympathises with the refugees and called on them to feel comfortable in his kingdom while efforts are being made to settle the chieftaincy conflict in their communities.
Pusiga Naba, NabaTambiusibalug who presented the items on behalf of the Bawku Naba appealed to the refugees to comport themselves in accordance with the laws of the land and also appealed to the local community members to be hospitable to the visitors.
Meanwhile, a branch of the Assemblies of God Church at Widnaba also has donated two bags of rice and a cash of 100 cedis to the asylum seekers.District Chief Executive Madam Victoria Ayamba and NADMO have said they will continue to monitor the situation and work on a response plan in case of an increase of arrivals, including the prepositioning of relief items.
One of the refugees, Uware Vincent, called on other benevolent organizations to support them with food and other basic needs to make life comfortable for them.
The refugees called on the government and authorities of Burkina Faso to urgently resolve the matter for them to return home.
