The Paramount Chief of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II, has pledged to embark on a massive educational and industrial programme to transform Jamestown under his jurisdiction.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, September 18, Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II promised to modernize the traditional mode of fishing in his area as well as set up a scholarship scheme and a disability health centre with training facilities.
Addressing journalists, traditional authorities and members of the general public who had thronged the venue, the Jamestown Mantse said he intends to push for the refurbishment of the old harbour and lead a crusade to enhance the beaches into world-class recreational centres.
He also promised to establish a microfinance company to support businesses with loans at low interest rates, and build a fishing school at Jamestown and an ultra-modern cold storage facility to shift focus from obsolete methods of fishing.
This he believes will strengthen the domestic economy of the prominent fishing community.
The Paramount Chief said sanitation is an important issue on his agenda, and hinted at the construction of modern toilet facilities to ease pressure on public places of convenience and bathhouses in Jamestown.
The press conference, which was organized by the Heads of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in the Greater Accra Region in Accra, was the first major public encounter by the Jamestown Mantse, Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II, after the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs unanimously dismissed a suit for an interlocutory injunction against his ascension to the throne.
The suit was filed by Adontenghene Nii Ngleshie Addy V and Prof. Hubert Addy at the High Court against Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II (known in private life as Dr. Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye) and eight others, to determine the heirs-apparent to the throne.
The case was later referred to the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs for resolution on grounds that the High Court had no jurisdiction over the case.
In spite of the bitter legal challenge, the victor, Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II, pledged himself to strengthen the bond of love among the paternal and maternal heads of the deceased family.
Heads of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in the Greater Accra Region who were at Tuesday’s press conference, announced that they have resolved to bury the late chief of Ngleshie Alata (Jamestown) Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V this year, to pave the way for development.
According to the customs of Jamestown, a successor is installed immediately after a chief dies, to steer the affairs of the area.
