Vice President of Imani Ghana Selorm Brantie has chided authorities for abandoning the Madina-Adentan Highway footbridges, a situation which has led to the loss of many lives.
Speaking on 3FM‘s Sunrise, Mr. Brantie said although the MCE for La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly has assured him there has been a meeting with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure work on the bridges is completed, there is still no sign.
He noted, however, that he will not relent in ensuring that work on the footbridge is completed, since incomplete bridges has cost lives of many pedestrians who attempt to cross the road.
“Pedestrians should be vigilant when crossing the road,” he advised.
He, however, added that the number of people crossing the road is overwhelming, and that it seems the authorities do not see it as a priority to have the footbridges completed to ensure easy crossing.
“When you are talking about people’s safety, and the fact that anything can trigger thing… Many a time, the traffic lights do not work and pedestrians are knocked down by motorists, and this is a grand danger to human safety,” he noted.
He, therefore, stated that authorities who are to see to the completion of the footbridges and also replace the malfunctioning traffic lights should not “wait for the death of a VVIP before we change something”.
“Everybody in the position of power should ensure that the footbridge is constructed expeditiously”.
Emmanuel Nana Daaquah, a pedestrian who was also on the show, shared his painful experience of losing his mum on that same stretch on June 26, 2014 while crossing the road.
Work on the Madina-Adentan footbridges began as far back as 2009, but is yet to be completed, nine years since the beginning of work.
The project was supposed to have been completed as far back as 2011, but it is unclear why the bridge is still left uncompleted.
Residents and pedestrians have complained over the years over the loss of many lives within that area, but there is still no progress with regard to the project.
