Member of Parliament for Yunyoo in the Northern Region, Joseph Bibopa Naabu, has stated the National Democratic Congress cannot do away with its founder Jerry John Rawlings who is perceived to be sabotaging the party.
Mr. Rawlings who is a former President of Ghana has been accused by some members of the NDC of being in bed with President Nana Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party and has not been seeking the interest of the party he founded.
Being critical of the John Mahama-led government, he was alleged to have sabotaged the NDC in the run up to the December 2016 elections, which some believe, contributed to the defeat of John Mahama and the party.
Some party faithfuls who have had cause to complain about the actions and inactions of Mr. Rawlings have asked that he is sidelined by the party.
However, Mr. Naabu commenting on the issue on 3FM Thursday said the former President cannot be sidelined by the party he founded because he toiled to make it what it is today.
“We cannot do away with the founder; we cannot do away with the former president Rawlings, and President Rawlings used his blood for NDC so we cannot do away with him,” argued.
Former President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday called on Mr. Rawlings to discuss the party’s re-organization ahead of the upcoming regional and national executive elections as well as presidential primaries.
Prior to this meeting, there were rumours of disagreements between the party, Mr. Mahama and Mr. Rawlings.Mr. Naabu welcomed the fact that the party is now going back to its roots by reconciling with Mr. Rawlings.
“If President Mahama is now seeing that Former President Rawlings is the leader and founder of the party, he went to him yesterday and I am very very happy, it is a very good move to unite the NDC,” he said.
Mr Naabu who is the spokesperson of the Alban Bagbin, a flagbearer hopeful, said his commitment to Bagbin is unquestionable though he is willing to support anyone the party will elect to lead into the 2020 elections.
“I am more than committed to Alban Bagbin, [but] whoever wins our flagbearer to lead the NDC as a candidature [sic] for 2020, I will support that person” said.
He said Bagbin is going to win the flagbearaship for the National Democratic Congress easily, saying “I am sure that Alban Babgin is going to win hands down” he noted.
