Islamic scholar, Sheikh Bagaya Hussein Mohammed, has asked Muslims not to consider their annual festival Eid ul Adha as just a celebration but a remembrance of the sacrifices of Abraham years ago.
Speaking on Sunrise morning show on 3FM Tuesday, he said Muslims consider the festival as a celebration that transcends rituals hence it should be seen as such by all individuals.
“Eid ul Adha might be seen by some as just a ritual but for us people of understanding, it goes beyond a simple ritual; we’re commemorating what Abraham did so many years ago” he stated.
Eid ul Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year and considered the holier of the two.
According to the host of TV3’s IQRA, the pilgrimage of Hajj which is also known by many as the journey to Mecca is a part of the festival, and that anyone who is able to go to Mecca is supposed to assess him or herself to be living a true life of sacrifice.
He explained sacrifice transcends the killing of rams and the sharing of food.
“Eid ul Adha is a part and parcel of the Hajj pilgrimage. The one performing it should ask himself these questions; are you truly living the life of sacrifice or ritual? Where the sacrifice transcends the ritual, where it transcends the killing of rams and sharing of food,” he said.
Sheikh Mohammed further explained the sharing of food and killing of rams is not what makes a meaning to the Allah, but rather the fear of Allah through the act of performing such rituals is what is most important.
He said most social vices that are caused by alleged Muslims who belong to the Boko Haram or the Al-Qaida are as a result of the wrong teachings of the words of Islam since the demise of Prophet Mohammed.
According to Sheikh Mohammed, political Islam has taken over the world after the demise of the prophet, and that is why Islam has a lot of branches.
He stated that until corrections are made in the teachings of Islam, these problems will continue to happen.
“I have visited and seen the cunning things in some part of Nigeria as a result of wrong teachings of Islam that is how come Islam has so many branches. We ought to have a proper teaching of Islam,” he urged.
