Highlife musician, Afriyie Wutah, who is part of the music duo Wutah, says there are many musicians in Ghana but very few of them can be described as stars that people can look up to.
According to him, the fact that an artiste performs on an international platform does not make that artiste a star.
Afriyie stated that, when you take out the likes of him, Praye, and Kwabena Kwabena and some old artistes, there are no stars in recent times.
Speaking on 3FM’s Showbiz 927, Afriyie said artistes of today are all doing the same thing, including driving and eating in the same restaurants.
Talking about challenges he has faced in the music industry, this is what he said:
“Performing artistes like myself, we need theaters to perform. We want to be working all the time. We are not doing bad though, we have plus233, we have more places, we have Piano Bar, these are places where people meet to enjoy life music. I think we need more places musicians will showcase what they have.”
He added, “One doesn’t need to sit and wait for a big show or endorsement to survive, but that is the norm now you know, and it’s sad but if you are working and every weekend you are playing, you play here for that amount. Unfortunately, the name is so huge that when it is mentioned, whoever owns the pub would think he would charge high.”
He explained that, if musicians get shows every weekend, they would not charge so high when they are called.
The musician disclosed he is a member of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) , and that he gets the royalties due him.
He mentioned that Wutah as a group got their first endorsement when Glo came to Ghana.
According to him, they were the first Glo signees alongside Reggie Rockstone among others.
Afriyie stated that the group currently has a deal with Melcom and Vodafone.
The vocalist revealed that they have songs in the pipeline that would soon be released.
Wutah who have won several awards both local and international, is made up of Daniel Morris (Risky or Wutah Kobby) and Frank Osei (Afriyie Wutah).
They went their separate ways in 2010 when they had some misunderstanding, and got back in 2017.
