Member of the NDC’s communication team, Sammy Gyamfi says government decision to tax luxury vehicles as outlined in he midyear budget review is going to be a burden on the vehicle owners.
Speaking on TV3 New Day, he said the new tax will be an extra cost to be incurred by these vehicle owners since they already pay a lot as import duties.
“You know that if you bring in any vehicle into the country, the import duty you pay on that vehicle is based on the value of the car, so the higher the value, the higher the import duty you pay.”
Sammy Gyamfi added, “On every litre of fuel you buy, 40% goes into taxes for the state, so the levy on luxury vehicles result to over-burdening.”
He further said the luxury tax is a case of double jeopardy, but most Ghanaians are failing to see it as such.
Addressing the issue of some new taxes that have been introduced, he said, “The timing of the introduction of the new tax measures is what is painful. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is crying for help.”
He went further to remind government of a promise they made to reduce corporate tax from 25% to 20%, stating that the promise is yet to be fulfilled.
The NDC member said government is hiding behind other taxes to rip Ghanaians off their funds despite the non increment of the VAT.
“Again, it is a lie to suggest that import duties have not gone up, when you speak like this what you do is that you insult the intelligence of GUTA, AGI, ICU and the Abbossey- Okai spare part dealers.”
