The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is calling on security services in the country to get to the root of ‘fake’ Ghana cards being circulated on social media platforms.
“Whiles we call on the BNI and CID to thoroughly investigate this issue and bring the perpetrators to book, we also want Ghanaians to be vigilant in order to keep the problem at bay,” the PPP said in a statement.
They expressed displeasure over how issues regarding the Ghana card has been handled by both the governing NPP and the opposition NDC.
According to the party, the circulation of ‘fake’ cards on social media platforms undermines Ghana’s security.
“For the past week, social media has been awashed with fake Ghana cards of some NDC MPs. We are terrified since this undermines and bastardizes the integrity and security of the process and threatens the peace of our country.”
The PPP further indicated that issues of identity theft jeopardizes national security, hence the issue must not be swept under the carpet.
They also expressed their support for the Ghana card to be acquired and used by all Ghanaians.
The party added that the resultant national identification number by all citizens from birth until death will help greatly to bring about greater discipline into all aspects of national lives.
“It will help us know where we live, whether we have a job, how many children we have, so we can begin to address the problems we face.”
Ghana card cost
Although the PPP commended the National Identification Authority for a good work done so far, they expressed disappointment over the cost of the project.
“We are shocked and disappointed that the work the NIA did in the process can at best be described as another financial loss to the tax payer.”
They alleged that documents available show that the total cost of the project is $1.4billion, but CEO of the NIA, Professor Ken Attafuah is on record as saying it will cost the nation $293 million and not $1.4billion.”
The PPP suggested an audit and a probe into the cost of the Ghana card project.
“To promote good governance, accountability, transparency, and probity in our public financial management system, we wish to suggest that a Committee of Parliament can invite the NIA at any time to scrutinize the cost and report their findings to the people of Ghana.”
According to the PPP, if the NIA together with the CEO are found guilty of any wrong doing, they ought to be dealt with appropriately.
“Any detected wrong doing on the part of the NIA will land on the desk of the Special Prosecutor for prosecution for acts of corruption.”
NDC and agitations
The PPP accused the NDC of doing Ghana a disservice through their decision to not register for the Ghana card.
“NDC party cannot be allowed to continue their disservice to Ghana even in opposition when they blatantly refused to implement the Ghana Card policy for the eight years they were in power.”
They further urged the opposition NDC to allow the process to continue and not attempt to bastardize the exercise by raising non-existent difficulties with the process in the pursuit of their suspicious and covert political agenda.
