2010 World Cup champions Spain have sacked manager Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui was named as Real Madrid manager on Tuesday but the decision may have ruffled some feathers in the Spanish camp in Russia.
The decision to sack the former Spain U-21 coach comes two days before La Roja‘s opener with Portugal in Group B.
After taking charge of Spain in 2016, on the back of European successes with the U-19 and U-21 national teams, Lopetegui did not lose a match.
He supervised 20 matches, winning 14 and drawing 6.
There were initial reports Captain Sergio Ramos and Deputy Captain Andres Iniesta had prevailed on the Spanish Football Federation to rescind the decision to sack Lopetegui.
It is likely assistant coach Pablo Sanz will take over.
