The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intercepted some of the consignment of the unwholesome ‘So Nice’ mackerel in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.
At least 500 cartons of the “So Nice” brand of the mackerel were found on Thursday afternoon following a frantic search by the FDA.
The mackerel had left Accra before the police from the Mile 7 District intercepted the ‘Asahi’ mackerel at Ofankor last week Tuesday.
Acting Ashanti Regional Head of Food and Drugs Authority, Nora Narkie Tei-Larbi said the Authority confiscated the product in warehouses but her outfit has so far not found any of the product on the market.
Nora Tei-Larbi cautioned consumers to stay away from that product.
She told TV3 Ashanti Regional correspondent Ibrahim Abubakar that the FDA is still looking for more of the product, suspecting that about 1500 cartons of the unwholesome product could have been kept somewhere.
She advised consumers to report to the FDA or the police if they find the So Nice mackerel on the market because the product is “not supposed to be on our market”.
She confirmed that the product that was seized on Thursday has not been registered with the FDA, adding that its safety cannot be guaranteed.
