Black Starlets have grown from underdogs, prior to the tournament, to favourites
Ghana’s U-17 men’s soccer team, the Black Starlets, drew 0-0 with Guinea on Saturday, May 20 in the final Group A game of the ongoing Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.
The result sees both sides qualifying to the semi-final stage of the tournament with the Ghanaians topping the group with seven points.
The two-time champions had gone into the match with a clean sheet from their two opening games while their West African counterparts had dropped points against Cameroon in their second game.
Both sides put five goals past Gabon in their respective fixtures with the hosts, whose consolation against the Guineans became the only goal they would score in the tournament.
With just a point to see them through to the next stage and, more importantly, the world cup prior to the match at the Stade de l’Amitie, Guinea did well to hold the tournament favourites at bay.
Not even Cameroon’s 1-0 win over Gabon in the other group game will stop the two-time Bronze medallists from advancing.
Ghana and Guinea will know their semi-final opponents on Sunday as Tanzania play Niger and Mali take on Angola in Group B.
The semi-final fixtures are scheduled for Wednesday, May 24.
