The New Juaben Assembly members have failed to confirm the president’s nominee of 65-year-old Comfort Asante for Municipal Chief Executive.
The former constituency executive for the ruling party polled 49 votes out of 78, representing 62.8 per cent of total votes cast, falling short of the two-thirds majority required.
The highly tensed election saw the Assembly Hall of New Juaben highly packed.
Patrons of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Cocobod’s board chair, Hackman Owusu Agyeman, were hoping the nominee will secure a one-touch endorsement.
But the story changed after an hour of voting.
Mrs Asante had 49 Yes and 29 No.
The Eastern Region Minister, Eric Kwakye Daffour, and Hackman Owusu Agyeman expressed disappointment at the results.
The Assembly members are expected to return on May 17 to vote again, by law.
