The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has applauded the Accra High Court judgement which has ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to allow Ghanaians resident abroad to partake in national elections starting from Election 2020.
The PPP describes the judgment as ‘good news’ saying it has the potential of deepening Ghana’s democracy.
‘We are struggling to understand why Ghanaians resident abroad cannot vote in national elections whereas the 1992 Constitution allows every Ghanaian who is eighteen years of age or above and of sound mind to vote,’ the PPP in a statement signed by Paa Kow Ackon, Communication Director said.
Some of the other political parties have kicked against the decision by the High Court.

PPP WELCOMES JUDGEMENT ON ROPAA
The Progressive People’s Party is pleased with the judgment from the Accra High Court ordering the Electoral Commission of Ghana to immediately operationalize Act 699 to allow Ghanaians resident abroad partake in national elections starting from Election 2020.
This judgment is good news as it has the potential of deepening our democracy.
Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution states that “every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years of age or above and of sound mind has the right to vote and is entitled to be registered as a voter for the purposes of public elections and referenda.”
We are struggling to understand why Ghanaians resident abroad cannot vote in national elections whereas the 1992 Constitution allows every Ghanaian who is eighteen years of age or above and of sound mind to vote.
The fact remains that citizens who live abroad have not benefited from such right except only citizens (and their spouses) employed at post outside Ghana in the service of the republic, the United Nations or any other international organisation who are entitled to vote outside Ghana.
The PPP believes that the High Court’s decision has confirmed the viability of the political platform the PPP offered during the 2016 election.
In the 9th Point of the PPP 10 point agenda, the party promised to “Empower the Diaspora. Establish a Secretariat to cater for the needs of Ghanaians Abroad and the African Diaspora by June 30th 2021.
Provide a support system to encourage re-entry, investment, safe and healthy vacations and transfer of knowledge and technology.
Ensure full citizenship rights to Ghanaians Abroad so that they can vote and serve in public sector positions.”
It is the considered opinion of the PPP that if the laws of Ghana; including the law on FCUBE can be enforced with a sense of urgency, Ghana shall make strides in democracy and development.
#Awake Ghana
Signed,
Paa Kow Ackon,
Communication Director.
