RESIDENTS of the Ho Municipality have expressed mixed reactions to the election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general election.
While some believe he stands a strong chance of winning the election, others argue that his candidature would not yield success for the party.
According to some residents, the victory of Dr Bryan Acheampong in the Volta Region, where he polled 5,234 votes against Dr Bawumia’s 4,093, indicated that delegates in the region had more confidence in Dr Acheampong than in the flagbearer-elect.
Speaking in an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Ho over the weekend, Mr Emmanuel Afetorgbor noted that in the Oti Region, Dr Bawumia secured 3,164 votes, while Dr Acheampong obtained 1,310, suggesting that delegates in the Oti Region had greater confidence in Dr Bawumia than those in the Volta Region.
Mr Afetorgbor said if Dr Acheampong had won the NPP presidential primaries nationwide as he did in the Volta Region, the party would have faced serious challenges in winning the 2028 general election.
He argued that the NPP would find it difficult to market Dr Acheampong as a presidential candidate, compared with Dr Bawumia, who was Vice-President for eight years and the party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 general election.
On the other hand, Mr Wisdom Afelete expressed the view that the NDC would win the 2028 general election regardless of the presidential candidate it elects.
However, another resident, Mr Victor Nyasorgbor, commended the NPP for the peaceful manner in which it conducted the primaries in the Volta and Oti Regions, saying the election of Dr Bawumia again as the party’s presidential candidate posed a threat to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Nyasorgbor said the NDC would find it more difficult to select and market a candidate for the 2028 elections compared with the NPP, whose candidate was already well known following the 2024 general election.
“I am a strong supporter of the NDC, and I am telling you that the way President Mahama is leading this country shows that he is laying a solid foundation for Ghanaians to vote for the NDC in 2028. Even without President Mahama as the presidential candidate, whoever is elected will win easily,” he explained.
Mrs Felicia Dorledzi also shared the view that Dr Bawumia posed no threat to the ruling party, stating that prices of goods were declining under the NDC-led Mahama administration.
She said indications were that Ghanaians would enjoy better living conditions under the current government, compared with what she described as the hardships experienced during the administration of former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
