Kingsley Agyeman Defends His Record

The former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has maintained that he executed his work at the Secretariat with utmost diligence.

The Abuakwa South constituency legislator has thus denied allegations of “any wrongdoing” during his tenure as the Registrar, under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.

A statement signed by his lawyers, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, dated Thursday, 13th August, 2026 responded to recent public commentary by Madam Sabah Zita Benson, High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

According to the lawyers, the recent commentary by the High Commissioner is “aimed at renewing public ridicule against our client.”

PROBE

The lawyers in the statement highlighted the need for the High Commissioner to cease further public commentary on the matter.

The release recalled that the High Commissioner herself had acknowledged investigations have already been initiated into the allegations of corruption surrounding the awards of scholarship during the tenure of the previous administration.

Therefore, the lawyers opined that “the High Commissioner’s resort to the media to publicly berate our client rather than allowing the appropriate security and investigative bodies to discharge their mandate is regrettable and unwarranted.”

COOPERATION

According to the statement, the recent comments by Madam Zita Benson were not the first time the High Commissioner was making “such wild allegations”, notwithstanding the pendency of the investigations by state investigative agencies.

However, the lawyers note that their client, Kingsley Agyemang, has availed himself and fully cooperated with the investigators.

The lawyers say their client is cooperating with the investigation with a view to ensuring that the allegations are thoroughly probed, his name is completely cleared and the matter is brought to a definitive conclusion.

“Our client is a law-abiding citizen who remains focused on faithfully discharging the

mandate entrusted to him by the good people of Abuakwa South and is firmly committed

to the rule of law and due process. He remains confident that in the fullness of time, the truth will prevail and he will be vindicated,” the release added.

ALLEGATION

Following the change in government last year, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Sabah Zita Benson, made public what she described as “recklessness” in the awards of scholarships by the former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang.

Mrs Benson accused the former Registrar’s administration of leaving behind about £35 million in scholarship debt.

She said the arrears comprised dates back from 2021, 2022–2023, 2023–2024 and for 2024–2025.

She alleged that scholarships were awarded without adequate funding, including the further allegation that some students paid as much as US$10,000 in bribes to obtain scholarship award letters.

RESPONSE

Dr Agyemang, however, rejected the accusations, arguing that scholarship arrears predated his tenure. He said the Akufo-Addo administration inherited about GH¢230 million, or US$57 million, in scholarship debt in 2017 and cleared it to prevent students from being sent home.

He described the outstanding obligations during his tenure as institutional liabilities rather than personal financial recklessness, insisting that he did his work diligently while in office.
