The opposition New Patriotic Party has reconstituted its Standing and Sector Committees in what political observers are already viewing as an early strategic move towards the 2028 general elections.
The decision, taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council at a meeting held on Thursday, May 7, forms part of efforts to reorganise the party machinery following its defeat in the 2024 elections and position itself for a political comeback.
A statement issued by the party said the committees were constituted in accordance with provisions of the party’s constitution, specifically Articles 10(2)(b), 10(3)(b) and 14(5).
Under the new arrangement, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Fred Oware, will chair the Finance Committee, a strategic organ expected to drive the party’s resource mobilisation efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Former Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Owen Kwame Frimpong Bonsu Amoah, has been tasked to lead the Electoral Affairs Committee, a critical structure responsible for election preparedness, polling oversight and voter mobilisation.
The Disciplinary Committee will be chaired by former Roads and Highways Minister, Kwaku Amoako-Atta, while former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, heads the influential Policy Committee expected to shape the party’s ideological and governance direction towards 2028.
The party also appointed former Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, to chair the Organisational Committee, with Kingsley Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, taking charge of the Research Team.
On the communications front, former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, will lead the Communications Committee, a role expected to become increasingly significant as political campaigns begin to gather momentum in the coming years.
The reconstitution of the committees is widely seen within political circles as part of broader internal restructuring efforts aimed at strengthening party cohesion, rebuilding grassroots confidence and sharpening the NPP’s electoral strategy ahead of the 2028 polls.
