Mr Ralph Opoku-Adusei, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, has commissioned the refurbished Queen Elizabeth II Day Nursery School, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve early childhood education in the municipality.
The renovation and retooling project, which cost thousands of cedis, was fully financed by the MP as part of his commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and ensuring a conducive learning environment for young children.
Established in 1954, the facility had seen little or no major upgrade for decades resulting in its deplorable state before the renovation.
The weakened structures, insufficient furniture, and a shortage of essential teaching and learning materials and the corresponding challenges for teachers and pupils coupled with concerns among parents and education authorities drew the attention of the MP to intervene.
The centre will now give traders at the Bekwai market the opportunity to enrol their children while they conduct business. Mr. Opoku-Adusei, an old pupil of the school described the project as a personal commitment to give back to the institution that laid the foundation for his academic journey.
According to him, the Children deserve to be nurtured in safe and well-equipped environments noting that the previous condition of the school fell short of acceptable standards.
He noted that quality education begins at the early stages and must be supported by adequate infrastructure, proper furniture, and relevant learning materials.
He said it is unacceptable for such an important institution to be left in a state of neglect for decades.
Mrs. Letricia Obeng, Bekwai Municipal Director of Education, commended the MP for his commitment, and called on corporate organisations, philanthropists, and development partners to support the rehabilitation of other schools in the municipality facing similar infrastructural challenges.
She indicated that the newly refurbished facility would significantly enhance teaching and learning at the nursery level, providing a safer, more comfortable, and stimulating environment for children.
Mrs. Obeng reiterated that the project also stands as a testament to the importance of investing in early childhood education as a foundation for national development.
